Please join the Historical Society of Easton for the second lecture of the winter season focusing on the Puritans of New England. Their religious, political and cultural ways played a significant role in the development of the New England colonies during the 17th Century. Their beliefs and ethics laid the foundation for generations. The lecture will be held on Sunday, February 8th at 2 PM in the Easton Public Library’s Community Room. We welcome Dr. Anna Lawrence, Assistant Professor of History at Fairfield University to Easton for the first time to present her work.
The lecture will explore how the Puritans’ pursuit of religious freedom forged a new beginning in the New World. She will discuss how their religious beliefs shaped their families, their communities and the governing bodies of the early colonies.
Dr. Lawrence specializes in women and gender studies in early America, religious and transatlantic history and African-American culture a Fairfield University. In 2010, the Lily Endowment Young Scholars in American Religion Program selected her as an outstanding scholar. She is author of One Family Under God: Love, Belonging, and Authority in Early Transatlantic Methodism (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011). She is currently studying the works of an early African-American female preacher Jarena Lee.
